Course Overview

 

Biology 10003 Contemporary Issues in Biology
This course in a freshman level non-science majors biology course focusing on biology-related issues in contemporary society.  Some of the issues covered include cancer, cloning, stem cells, DNA, genetic engineering, emerging diseases, heart disease, HIV, exotic species, global warming, and acid rain.

Chemistry 40503 Basic Biochemistry (for nutrition majors)
This course is designed specifically for nutrition/dietetics and other allied health majors.  It does not count towards a chemistry major.  The course focuses exclusively on human body biochemistry and substances in the body related to disease.  Some of the topics covered in relation to diagnosis of disease are enzymes, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, acid-base balance, ions, and hormones.

Chemistry 40501 Basic Biochemistry Laboratory (for nutrition majors)
This course is designed specifically for nutrition/dietetics majors.  It covers concepts and techniques related to measurement of substances of diagnostic importance in human blood and body fluids.

Biology 40503 Basic Biochemistry
This course is an elective course for biology majors.  It may be especially helpful for students planning on attending medical, dental, veterinary, or other medically-related training.   The course focuses exclusively on human body biochemistry and substances in the body related to disease.  Some of the topics covered in relation to diagnosis of disease are enzymes, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, acid-base balance, ions, and hormones.

Biology 40501  Basic Biochemistry Laboratory
Same course as Chemistry 40501.  Limited space is available in this class.  Must obtain instructor permission to enroll in this lab.

Biology 40300 and 40310  Teaching of Biology
Two semesters (may take one or continue for 2 semesters) of assisting in teaching the Contemporary Issues in Biology Labs to non-majors.  Must  have taken Biology 10003 or Biology 10504/10514.  Student will be assigned to a specific lab and faculty member according to their availability and the need of the department.  Students in the second semester get additional teaching experience/responsibility beyond what was introduced in the first semester.
