Grant Work

THECB/TEA Type A - Contemporary Issues in Biology Training
Dates – May 13, 2004 – May 15, 2004

Participated in the THECB/TEA Type A Grant that was awarded to Dr. Ray Drenner of the Biology Department and Dr. Molly Weinburgh of the School of Education in the following roles:

• Wrote text to accompany PowerPoint slides for 25 lectures in the Biology Curriculum used to train trainers of professional development classes for State of Texas Biology teachers

• Edited content of PowerPoint lectures

• Met with advisory board consisting of State of Texas biology teachers to help determine needs of teachers in the professional development classes

• Wrote and edited lab activities

• Edited all other materials including training manuals, syllabi, “heads up” notes to teachers, introductory materials, and any other text portion of the project

• Traveled to Austin to search the image libraries of Texas Department of Transportation and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in order to acquire images that could be used in the PowerPoint slides

• Prepared CD training manuals to be distributed to the Trainers that were taught under the grant

• Assisted in the training session of the Trainers as needed by Dr. Drenner and Dr. Weinburgh

• Further developed the notes sections of the PowerPoint lectures

• Played a support role to Dr. Drenner and Dr. Weinburgh through the first half of the teacher training workshop

• Taught the lecture portion of the last half of the teacher training workshop

• Prepared a pre-assessment and post-assessment exam which was administered to the participants at the beginning and end of the training workshop to better determine their level of understanding of contemporary and current issues in biology
