EFFECTS OF FISH ON LAKE SYSTEMS: A BIBLIOGRAPHY
1997 to 2001

INTRODUCTION

For the last two decades I have had the pleasure of being part of a large international group of scientists who have investigated the role of fish in food webs of lake ecosystems. Field surveys and experiments conducted over several decades have shown that fish can directly or indirectly affect virtually all biological and chemical components of lake ecosystems. Like scientists in other fields, those of us interested in food webs face a formidable challenge as we explore the very complex interrelationships within food webs while trying to keep up with an exponentially growing number of published papers. Students new to this field face a particularly difficult task as they attempt to locate and understand such a large body of literature which spans the disciplines of fisheries biology, limnology and ecology. Despite the publication of several excellent reviews and books on aspects of fish effects, there has not been a comprehensive bibliography which students and more senior investigators could use. By making this bibliography available on the World Wide Web, I am hoping to initiate the development and maintenance of a comprehensive list of published papers on fish effects for all of us to use in our research and courses. As explained later, I hope you will help correct mistakes and omissions in this version and contribute to its future development.

Because of the large number of papers dealing with fish effects on lake systems, I had to draw rather blurred lines about which papers to include. For example, I included papers on niche partitioning and competition of fish but I did not include papers which only reported the diet of fish. I also did not include papers on interactions between other components in the food web (such as the zooplankton-phytoplankton linkage) unless the papers specifically included information about how such linkages were affected by fish. Below is a list of major topics included in the bibliography.
  1. feeding behavior and selectivity of freshwater fish
  2. factors controlling prey availability and fish feeding rates
  3. niche partitioning and competition
  4. effects of fish removal for renovation of fish communities
  5. fish polyculture
  6. effects of species introductions
  7. biomanipulation
  8. direct and indirect effects of fish on physical, chemical and biological components of lentic systems

I am sure that I have overlooked many important papers and I know there are clerical errors. I apologize for any oversights and mistakes I have made. Please let me know of any problems and I will correct them as soon as possible. If you publish papers containing information about fish effects on lakes, please send a reprint or reference to me, and I will be sure to include it in the next version.

During the last 20 years, a number of my students have contributed to the formation of this bibliography and I want to acknowledge their efforts. My thanks go to Bob Baca, Mike Edwards, Moss Fennel, Kirsten Gallo, Kirk Gukenberger, Dave Hambright, Holli Lancaster, Xavier Lazzaro, Steve McComas, John Mummert, Weston Nowlin and Bob Trebatoski. Also, several colleagues were kind enough to send me their CVs and papers and I very much appreciate their help. Finally, I am grateful to Melissa Payton for helping type this list of over 1700 papers.
